Excursion to Upper Drava river in Austria

Upper Drava river in Austria is beeing well managed for many years now – with removal of embankments and opening of river branches (side arms). What’s intersting is that those are priority measures on Natura 2000 sites, because the main goal of those actions is the protection of biodiversity. We only wish that would be the case in Slovenia.

Klaus Michor, a longtime conceptual and implementation leader of renaturation works on river Drava and CEO of Revital kindly responded to our vish and had organized an excursion for a group from Slovenia. On 14th of April 2014 17 people – representatives from ARSO, VGB, VGP, ZRSVN and DOPPS experianced the outcomes of their work out on the field – and we had a lot to see! Wide river, kilometers of removed lateral embankments, bear gravel bars and high natural sandy river banks spoke for themselves. Great flood protection was also achieved and beside that the protection of many river banks, arable land and buildings. That was possible with transverse dug in objects, developed especialy for this purpose. Nature conservation work in the area has been recognized by the comunities and mayors of municipalities as the main drive for the local turism development and they all support it.

We are very thankful to Klaus who provided as with many answers to our questions, based on extensive years of experiance. In fall this year we begin with renaturation works on river Drava ourselves. You can read more about activities of our colleagues in Austria here.
