On Wednesday, 22th of January we presented the area of project actions of LIVEDRAVA to colleagues from WWF Austria. Visitors were Arno Mohl and Tanja Nikowicz, who both have a lot of experiance with lowland riparian ecosystems. Because they showed great interest in river branch restoration, we examined the river branch near the inflow of river Dravinja into river Drava, which will be opened and restored in 2015. Water level was extremly high and the water was flowing through the river branch, which occurs rarely. When returning from the site, we ran into Mr. Meznarič, a local farmer who manages large agricultural lands in riparian forest. We exchanged views about natural processes and farming in this area today and in the past, which was really intersting. We finished the day with discussion about new, future options for river restoration, which is important for biodiversity conservation, preventing floods and provisioning of clean groundwater.
